Gillian Lowndes (b.1936)

Born in Cheshire in 1936, Gillian Lowndes studied sculpture and then design at the Central School of Art, London. She set up a pottery in Bloomsbury in 1960, and divided her time between making and teaching until taking a sabbatical in Nigeria in 1971.

On her return her work showed an increasing trend of 'assemblage', and many of her pieces incorporate other materials such as wire and fibreglass. Her work has been described as 'ceramic collage'.

She has exhibited widely, both in Britain and internationally. She was made an honorary fellow of the London Institute in 2002.
